Yes, The glass on the front of the device is a different part then the actual screen itself. It is possible to just replace the glass only.

It is a small board, less than 1"-by-1", thermally bonded to the HD. The iMac works fine now, except the HD fan is always on, which is very annoying. If you want to replace it yourself and can settle for a used screen assembly, there are all sort of prices in the market depending on screen conditions and market place. You can find used screens on eBay, several online vendors and iFixit too, which quotes for the screen for 380$....

Before jumping to the wrong conclusion, how about fully diagnosing the problem first. I would start off using a flashlight shining it into the display.
