And if so, is it likely to cause any damage or harm in the short or long term (e.g. through causing something to overheat)? I could imagine that a very thin piece of paper could find its way between the cracks. It causing damage by resting on something I imagine is slim....

Chosen Solution I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. A small chunk of the white part came loose so I put steri strips over it to hold it until I get a replacement glass ordered. I have procrastinated far too long because it was still working perfectly until a couple days ago. Now the screen sometimes goes blank and it suddenly stops working. It will say there is only a partial charge but as soon as I plug it in it says 100% charged, and the apple sign pops up and it will work again....

You can try a system reset, just in case the fall caused a glitch, unlikely but it’s a fast and easy try, or possibly a board issue, but that’s not a DIY repair....
