is it possible to change a standard cpu (Intel Core i7 4771 LGA1150) on a late 2013 iMac 27" i7 2gb to a (Intel core i7-4790K, LGA1150)? will it work? ps please take a look at my other question Any ides why it won’t start
While most of the specs line up you do have 4 Watt difference between the two (TDP 84 Vs 88). I’m not sure its worth the risk to find out if it would work. Remember you’ll need to take the system completely apart! I would just leave the CPU alone as the performance difference is not that much. I don’t think anyone has even tried so you’ll be a trailblazer if you do give this a try.
I was just checking the same and the advice I discovered but unsure about was TDP 84. You can upgrade the 4771 to TDP 84 not that I found one may not exist or apple applied any intent for an upgrade of this 14,2 model. Here it seems to verify the 4790k I was thinking about upgrading for the little CPU increase because I am getting AAE -6104 errors with Pro Tools. The minor CPU increase may be the exact fix I need. But being a TDP 88. They say “*Officially, Apple provides no information about whether or not the processor in this model can be upgraded and the company does not intend for one to upgrade the processor either. However, the processor is mounted on a LGA 1150 socket and can be physically upgraded with another compatible processor with a maximum TDP of 84 W or less. Hoped this helped. I am no tech and low tech if that. This is what I found.
